There are some big changes for military students with the post 9/11 GI Bill. Veterans who want to purse a higher education have more options than ever before when it comes to picking a school of their choice. In addition to 4-year universities, students can also choose from vocational schools, apprentice programs and technical schools.
Vocational training has the ability to help around 13,000 veterans obtain jobs. These vocational programs are suitable for veterans who want to secure employment as soon as possible and who aren’t looking for a job that requires a four year degree. Examples of vocational schools include; real estate, cosmetology, electrician, plumbing and information technology.
Many Americans are currently out of a job and the government hopes that these training options will give veterans the ability to hone their skills. The government is broadening the options for schooling with the intention of reducing unemployment for veterans; women in particular. Statistics provided by the U.S Department of Labor show that 16.6 of female veterans are currently unemployed. One of the big changes is that the Post 9/11 GI Bill now makes the housing stipend available to online student. Traditionally, this stipend was only available for students attending traditional 4-year universities and colleges. The new changes will take place in October of 2011. One major change is that break pay will no longer be in effect. This means that students will not receive benefits between enrollments.
